On October 6, 2026, Onward NRV hosted its fourth annual Elevate NRV talent micro-conference at the Inn at Virginia Tech, bringing together HR professionals, business leaders, and community partners from across Virginia’s New River Valley. Sponsored by Mountain Lake Lodge, the half-day event focused on practical strategies to strengthen employee engagement, talent recruitment, retention, and workforce planning.
Laken Blankenship, Talent and Business Strategies Manager at Onward NRV, welcomed attendees and highlighted several talent attraction and retention resources available through the organization, including the NRV Livability Guide, NRV Cost of Living Calculator, and NRV Talent Network LinkedIn Group.
The keynote presentation, From Idea to Impact: The Evolution of Montgomery County’s Employee Engagement Committee, was delivered by Amy Marshall and Becky Hertling of Montgomery County. The pair shared how an employee-driven initiative evolved into a successful program that fosters connection across departments, strengthens workplace culture, improves employee satisfaction, and supports retention efforts.
Attendees then participated in interactive breakout workshops covering a variety of workforce topics. Stephanie Byers of InternshipsVA discussed strategies for transforming internships into sustainable talent pipelines, while Wendy Glass of Ignite Leadership + HR Group, explored workforce planning techniques that help organizations anticipate future staffing needs and talent gaps.
The second round of workshops focused on organizational effectiveness and leadership. Katie Beach of Mojo Leadership Group provided practical tools for leading teams through change and uncertainty, while Wendy Glass of Ignite Leadership + HR Group led a session on elevating HR from a transactional function to a strategic business partner.
Between sessions, attendees networked and exchanged ideas over coffee breaks sponsored by Skyline National Bank, continuing to build connections among local professionals committed to strengthening the region’s workforce.
