Onward NRV Participates in Economic Development Panel
On February 6th, Onward NRV Executive Director Katie Boswell participated as a panelist for the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce’s Eggs & Issues. Held at Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, the event convened local economic development experts to discuss key trends and challenges impacting Virginia’s New River Valley (NRV) and Montgomery County.
Joining Katie on the panel were Brian Hamilton, Economic Development Director of Montgomery County, and Kevin Byrd, Executive Director of the New River Valley Regional Commission. The discussion was moderated by John Provo, Executive Director of Virginia Tech’s Center for Economic & Community Engagement. The panel explored topics including the NRV’s recent economic growth, regional population challenges, federal funding concerns, and projections for the region’s economic future.
Katie highlighted how talent attraction and retention has become Onward NRV’s largest goal in its strategic plan, emphasizing the importance of keeping students in the NRV after graduation to sustain workforce development and regional growth. Additionally, she underscored the value of the NRV’s diverse industry base in ensuring economic stability for the region.
Katie also touched on pressing regional challenges such as the availability of sites and buildings as well as access to housing and childcare. Katie provided insight into how collaboration among local stakeholders can help address these issues and foster sustainable growth in the NRV.
Eggs & Issues is a monthly program hosted by the Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce, providing a platform for community members to network and engage with local, regional, and state leaders on important economic and policy topics.
