Onward NRV held its third annual Elevate NRV talent micro-conference on October 28, 2025, at the Inn at Virginia Tech, bringing together local business leaders to focus on talent recruitment and retention. This half-day event provided a collaborative space where employers could gain insights into effective practices from industry leaders, equipping them to foster stronger workplace cultures within Virginia’s New River Valley.
Katie Boswell, Executive Director of Onward NRV, kicked off the conference by welcoming attendees and introducing the event’s sponsor, Grant Irby of Keller Williams New River Valley, whose presentation highlighted how his collaboration with employers to provide relocation services helps foster a sense of belonging in the NRV.
He then introduced keynote speaker, Dr. Sarah Lyon-Hill, Director of Research Development at Virginia Tech Center for Economic and Community Engagement, whose discussion sparked reflection among participants throughout the event. In her presentation, Sarah explored the structural and demographic factors driving long-term workforce challenges, as well as strategies to help the region navigate them.
Following the keynote, participants attended breakout sessions that explored specific workforce topics. Panelists discussed how to effectively leverage AI in the recruitment process and how HR teams can identify and begin acting on areas for improvement within their organizations while guiding teams through transition. To end the afternoon, participants took part in interactive workshops covering ideas from crafting a compelling employee value proposition to conducting stay interviews for talent attraction and retention.
Between sessions, attendees connected over coffee, generously sponsored by FBMC Benefits Management, further building a network of supportive, like-minded professionals.
Elevate NRV has quickly become a key resource in Virginia’s New River Valley, providing actionable strategies and expert insights for local employers. Onward NRV extends its gratitude to keynote speaker Dr. Sarah Lyon-Hill, breakout session panelists, workshop facilitators, Grant Irby, FBMC Benefits Management, and all their investors for supporting this impactful micro conference.
