Recently, Onward NRV’s Talent and Business Strategies Manager, Laken Blankenship, had the opportunity to engage directly with high school students during Career Chats at Christiansburg High School and Radford High School.
During these sessions, Laken introduced students to the concept of economic development, sharing its vital role in helping communities thrive. She explained how Onward NRV serves the New River Valley by working with local governments, schools, and businesses to create quality jobs, support local employers, and enhance the region’s overall quality of life. Laken also highlighted several of Onward NRV’s key programs and initiatives such as the NRV Experience, Leaders’ Summits, marketing initiatives, and business attraction efforts.
In addition to discussing the mission and impact of Onward NRV, Laken also discussed career pathways within economic development. She outlined the diverse skills and backgrounds that can lead to success in the field, from communication and data analysis to relationship-building and organization. Students were encouraged to take an active role in exploring their interests by volunteering, staying informed about local community and business development efforts, networking with professionals, and enrolling in relevant courses while still in high school.
Onward NRV is proud to support career exploration opportunities within the local school system. Connecting with emerging talent today helps ensure the New River Valley continues to grow, innovate, and thrive for years to come. Engagement in career exploration events with high school students in the NRV is a core component of Onward NRV’s strategic plan to retain talent in support of the region’s long-term growth.
