Onward NRV Holiday Live Stream Discusses Road to Recovery for NRV and VA

Onward New River Valley hosted their Winter 2020 Holiday Investor Live Stream Event on Thursday, December 10, 2020. During this virtual event, investors learned about the current economic outlook for the New River Valley and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Onward NRV welcomed Brian Ball, the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Secretary of Commerce and Trade, as the guest speaker for the event.

James Cabler, Director of Business Engagement, began the event by welcoming viewers, thanking Onward NRV’s investors, and sharing a message from the event’s sponsor, First Community Bank. He then turned it over to Executive Director Charlie Jewell.

Charlie reported the results of Onward NRV’s Tech and Manufacturing Industry Competitiveness Surveys conducted in September 2020. The goal of the surveys was to better understand how local information technology and manufacturing companies were operating and adapting in the wake of COVID-19. Charlie then gave a general update about the economic recovery of Virginia’s New River Valley.

During the main portion of the event, Secretary Brian Ball shared how Virginia has been coping with the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic. He also discussed initiatives that the Commonwealth will focus on during economic recovery, such as implementing workforce training and reskilling programs, increasing access to broadband to rural communities, working to reshore manufacturing, and continuing economic relief programs to help businesses survive the pandemic.

Secretary Ball ended his presentation with a comment about the resiliency of Virginia businesses. He said “during this pandemic, it’s been remarkable how [businesses] have figured out how to survive and how to thrive. It’s a real testament to people.” After his remarks, Secretary Ball answered questions that Charlie Jewell asked on behalf of Onward NRV investors.
